The Route

This is the route I took from Fitzwilliam, NH to LaCrescent, MN.  I left Fitwilliam on Friday, April 30, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. and arrived in Minnesota and 6:00 p.m. on May 2, 2004.

The roads in New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts are a bit of a blur.  I was following Curt, breaking in tires, getting used to the bike and trying to take in as much as possible.  All the roads we traveled in those states were really nice.  Great, older looking homes, babbling brooks, twisty roads and all of it surrounded by gentle, rolling hills.

Friday, April 30

  • Start at Fitzwilliam, NH.

  • Hwy 119 from Fitzwilliam, NH to Brattleboro, VT. 

  • Hwy 9 from Brattleboro, VT to Searsburg, VT.

  • Hwy 8 from Searsburg, VT to North Adams, MA.

  • Hwy 2 from North Adams, MA to Williamstown, MA.

  • Hwy 7 from Williamstown, MA to South Williamstown, MA.

  • Hwy 43 from South Williamstown, MA to Stephentown, NY.

  • Highway 43 from Stephentown, NY to Alps, NY.  Excellent road.

  • Hwy 66 from Alps, NY to Hudson, NY.  Excellent road.

  • Highway 23 to from Hudson, NY to Cleverack, NY.  This is where I messed up, my intention was to take 9W) which would have been a much faster, seemingly more scenic route.  I missed it in Hudson.  I should have crossed the Hudson on the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, but neglected to do so.  Not having a good map really messed me up here.

  • Highway 9 from Claverack, NY to Kingston NY.  This was a fine road, just not very scenic and I was mad at myself for not making the correct turns in Hudson.

  • Highway 28 from Kingston, NY to Pine Hill, NY

  • Stopped at Pine Hill, NY

  • Hwy 28 from Pine Hill, NY to Margaretville, NY

  • Hwy 30 from Margaretville, NY to East Branch, NY (excellent road, twisty, pretty and light traffic)

  • Hwy 17 (Interstate 81) from East Branch, NY to Corning, NY

  • Highway 417 from Corning, NY to Allegany, NY (great two-lane road, little traffic, very pleasant)

  • Interstate 86 through western New York.

  • Interstate 90 through Pennsylvania and Cleveland, OH.

  • Ohio Turnpike (80/90) through western Ohio)

  • Stopped at Toledo, OH

  • Ohio Turnpike (80/90) through western Ohio)

  • Indiana Turnpike (80/90) though Indiana

  • Chicago Skyway (90?) into downtown Chicago.

  • Interstate 90/94 (Kennedy Expressway) through Chicago and the western suburbs.

  • Interstate 90 (Northwest Tollway) through Northern Illinois.

  • Interstate 90 across Wisconsin into Minnesota and home in LaCrescent.

  • The shipping quote I received was for about $700.  In the end, it saved a little bit of money to go and fetch it.
